The EU Food Safety Project has significantly improved food safety practices in the Turkish Cypriot community over the past three years.
- By educating Turkish Cypriot farmers and food business operators on EU food safety standards, the project has enabled them to adopt safer practices in their productions.
- A specific focus of the project was PDO Halloumi/Hellim production - with the support of the project 3 dairy factories are now certified by Bureau Veritas for PDO production and 21 dairy farms received the attestation for production of PDO eligible milk.
- Local administrative bodies and ‘laboratories’ have been strengthened, ensuring that establishments implement the EU-aligned safety measures effectively.
- With the strengthened control of the local bodies, the targeted operators can now implement the safety standards and ensure the traceability of their products, contributing to the long-term improvement of food safety in the Turkish Cypriot community.
