Simulation Exercise on FMD Conducted in Vadili/Vatili

A simulation exercise on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in bovine animals was carried out in Vadili/Vatili, focusing on enhancing readiness for responding to a suspected FMD outbreak.

The exercise unfolded as a realistic scenario, beginning with the notification of suspicion and the mobilisation of response teams. Following an initial briefing, preparations were made for a field visit, where procedures for entering a farm under strict biosecurity conditions were demonstrated and applied.

Once on site, teams worked through the essential steps of an FMD investigation: assessing the situation, conducting epidemiological inquiries, and practising clinical examination and sampling. The work continued with planning for the humane killing of animals where required, safe disposal measures, and strategies for cleaning and disinfection to contain and eliminate potential spread of the disease.

Throughout the exercise, emphasis was placed on structured briefings, clear communication, and accurate implementation of the newly developed contingency documentation and standard operating procedures. The day concluded with group reflections and a hot wash-up session to review lessons learned and identify areas for further strengthening.

This simulation served as an important milestone in improving preparedness and ensuring effective, coordinated responses to animal health emergencies.
